[The English Civil War of the 17th Century, a] long, difficult and often bloody struggle between the Crown and Parliament culminated in the victory of the Parliamentarians in the so-called “Glorious Revolution”, which ensured the accession to the throne of William and Mary and led to the adoption of the Bill of Rights of 1689, later followed by the Act of Settlement [1700 (12 & 13 Will. 3), c. 2] of 1701.
